mcgrady family

Post by Lonski »

Hi, I know its been QUITE some time since anyone has posted or commented here but I'm also looking into this same subject. I've read all the comments and honestly I'm not sure if we're from the same branch as I've only just started today.

Anyway my family are also McGradys. My dad is Paul M Mcgrady (B 1960) his dad was Alan Francis McGrady (B 12.07.1930) born to Matthew and Florence McGrady. I don't know their marriage or birth dates but I know they lived in Ingave road in Walton (Near Walton Prison and Fazakerley hospital) for some 70 years.

Matthew (I think) was born in Liverpool and I think his dad was an Irish immigrant from Dublin. I heard a story once as a kid that he was a cattle seller. He took the ferry over to Liverpool to sell and trade livestock and settled in Liverpool because the economy in Ireland was dire at the time. I don't know any more than that apart from him being a docker later on (perhaps in Bootle).

If anyone has some tips of hints about how to even start looking into family trees that would be great. I don't expect to find any long lost relatives but I thought I'd take a chance here as a starting point considering our names. I no longer live in Liverpool I moved to Cornwall but all my other family are still there and as far as I'm aware since leaving Dublin I'm pretty much the only one who has moved away since.

Thnak you for any help or advice that you can give.

Alan's mother's maiden name would appear to have been Beglan according to the births index.

His parents Mathew mcGrady and Margaret F Beglan married in 1929, the reference for their marriage would enable you to purchase their marriage certificate which give you their father's names.

There is someone else looking into this family on Ancestry.

Hi Lonski and welcome.

I think you would benefit from having a word with your Auntie Helen. :)

I'm Mrs Bertieone's son

I'm not related, lucky escape for you.
There's a tree on Ancestry, it appears that the owner is likely to be Helen. If you don't subscribe to Ancestry, your local library may provide it free and it would be worthwhile viewing it.

Whoa that freaked me out a little then haha, yeah I have a feeling I know which Helen it is and yes, she is my auntie so not a bad guess.

I need to get an account on ancestry I just wanted to see how far I got so I'd have stuff to go on before getting a subscription. All I know about my family was what I posted up which isn't very much at all which is why I want to know more. Do you think it will matter to the library that I'm quite far away from Liverpool now, can they order in information like that? (Can you tell I'm new to this yet? :) )

I will check it out and post whatever I find here, who knows it might save a bit of legwork for someone else in the future.

Re that Matthew McGrady / Margaret Florence Beglan marriage in 1929....
Marriages Jun 1929: MCGRADY, Matthew and Beglan, Margaret F - W.Derby 8b 820
Assuming he was at least 18 when he married a search of births between 1881 and 1912 gives only one birth in Liverpool.
Births Sep 1905: McGrady, Matthew - Liverpool 8b 48

He appears to have died in 1995...
Death: MATTHEW MCGRADY
Birth: 25 July 1905
Death: 1992; Sep qtr
District: LIVERPOOL -
Register number: 792; Volume 36; Page 314

Hopefully the 1929 marriage cert will show Matthew's father as John McGrady and if this is the right Matthew he is here in 1910+1...
Address: 43 Lemon Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool
John McGrady Head 39 1872 - Liverpool - Dock Labourer
Emily McGrady Wife 38 1873 - Hull, Yorkshire
John McGrady Son 15 1896 - Liverpool - Shipping Office
Alice McGrady Dtr 14 1897 - Liverpool
Robert McGrady Son 10 1901 - Liverpool
Emily McGrady Dtr 9 1902 - Liverpool
Mathew McGrady Son 5 1906 - Liverpool
Annie McGrady Dtr 1 1910 - Liverpool
Richard McGrady Son 0 1911 - Liverpool

I think this could be the parents' marriage:
Marriages Mar 1894: McGrady, John Henry and White, Emily - W. Derby 8b 607 [at St Mary's, Kirkdale]

There are a number of baptisms on http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk for this couple...
ST ANTHONY - 1895 - JOHN HENRY McGRADY - father JOHN HENRY - mother EMILY WHITE
ST MARY HIGHFIELD ST - 1896 - ALICE - father McGRADY, JOHN - mother EMILY WHITE
ST SYLVESTER - 1898 - JAMES HERBERT McGRADY - father JOHN - mother EMILY WHITE
ST ANTHONY - 1899 - THOMAS ALFRED McGRADY - father JOHN - mother EMILY WHITE
ST ANTHONY - 1900 - ROBERT BADEN-POWEL McGRADY - father JOHN - mother EMILY WHITE

13 children had been born but 6 had died by April 1911.

Wow thank you so much, I'll speak to the family to see if those names ring any bells with anyone and check out the link to confirm dates but it seems to me they're living in the same area and I'm pretty sure Matthew either died in 1991-2 so it seems like a good match.

So Margaret was her forename not Florence? Or is it just how the information is laid out?

Beglan was her surname it is confirmed, I think we're on the right track!!! :)

You would need the Irish marriage cert to confirm her father's name but this is a good match for Margaret Gallagher's birth...

Birth: Margaret Gallagher
Birth Date: 18 Jan 1872
Birthplace: Sligo, Ireland
Father's Name: William Gallagher
Mother's Name: Mary Hosey
Reference ID: vol 4-2, page 649

Hi and welcome to the forum. I think you will get a fair bit of help here and you deserve a post of your own. Sadly the original poster is no longer a member of the forum but perhaps they will pop back and see that you have posted on here.

For reference this is the link to the other post http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =2&t=10430

Apart from the help you will get on here I would suggest that you look to see if there are any Help Desks run by a local family history society near to where you live, they will help you get started and give you some pointers.

Also your local library should have free access to Ancestry and perhaps also Findmypast so that you can get a good start via the censuses and there are lots of Parish Registers for Liverpool on Ancestry, if you decide to take out a subscription be sure to take advantage of any free offers, usually a two week free trial first of all.
