Tomlinson marriage

Post by LindaG »

Hi,
I have a marriage for James Tomlinson and Nancy Collier 12 November 1827 at St Mary, Walton on the Hill, Lancs. The Banns do come up but not the certificate, does this come up for anyone else? I really need to know the father's name and occupation to be sure I have the right one.
thanks Linda

This is not uncommon, prior to Civil Registration in 1837 the information given was much less than subsequently, "Of this Parish" or possibly a named parish, and if you are lucky, bachelor/spinster and occupation are given. The witnesses are often members of the church but on checking other entries on nearby pages, if the names don't show up then they are probably either relations or friends.

The above is the full transcript of the marriage register entry transcribed by Lancs OPC there isn't any more information. Marriage registers at this time didn't record fathers' names and occupations unfortunately.

yes of course you are right, my brains not working very well! I think I do know the parents James Tomlinson and Jane Chestnut because he was a book binder like his father. I would just liked to have checked to be certain as there is another James Tomlinson who was born the same year just months between them.
Thanks Linda

I have had similar problems in the past but luckily after a lot of work and good luck I was able to sort out the two in question by researching others with the same name, where they were buried, perhaps why they were buried in that particular churchyard, were others of the same family also buried there, is there anybody else in the same grave?

Have you checked for Wills? again I didn't necessarily look at those in the direct line, if there is a chance you can get to Preston order as many as you can of any Wills with the right surname, one of them might give a clue.

If you are interested in how clues came my way you can read this http://www.luntfamilyhistory.pwp.blueyo ... stake.html

If you have a look at http://user.xmission.com/~nelsonb/lws.htm, there is a will available for a James Tomlinson, Liverpool and Tranmere bookbinder, Apr 1823. Possibly the father?

A copy of the will can be purchased from Lancashire Record Office.

Hi Linda & All,

Am putting this in the pot for you to consider. It may well be a coincidence but I could not let it pass.

Blues post of the marriage lists one of the witnesses as a Hamlet Baker (not a common name)

I have a Hamlet Baker in my tree who married a Hannah Collier: again too early for father's names

Marriage: 6 Oct 1823 St George, Everton, Lancashire, England Hamlet Baker - Bachelor of Liverpool

Hannah Collier - (X), Spinster of This Parish

Witness: Christopher Forster; Charlotte Sandiford, (X)

Married by Banns by: James Furnival Off Minister

Register: Marriages 1814 - 1837, Page 39, Entry 115

Source: LDS Film 2147913

Hannah Collier's Baptism

Hannah Collier - Daughter of Edward Collier & Catharine (formerly Rothwell) aka Kitty

Born: 2 Aug 1804

Abode: St. Andrew St.

Occupation: Miner

Register: Baptisms 1799 - 1810, Page 167, Entry 7

Source: LDS Film 1656377

Hannah Collier had a sister:

Nancy Collier - Daughter of Edward Collier & Kitty (formerly Rothwell)

Born: 29 Apr 1809

Abode: Elliot Hill

Occupation: Labourer

Register: Baptisms 1799 - 1810, Page 266, Entry 28

Source: LDS Film 1656377

Hope this is of some use.

Thanks everyone, the death is probably James Tomlinson who married Jane Chestnut, I will certainly look into this and all other suggestions. Grey, that is the baptism I have for Nancy so we have a connection, it gives me a bit more to look into.
