The Monaghan family tree
The Monaghan family tree
Really sorry to bother you but could do with some help please if anyone is able to give some advice. I'm trying to research my family tree and have hit a stumbling block. My great great great great grandad was Anthony Monaghan, born in Armagh in 1831 then married Christina Wallace (born in Fraserburgh, Scotland in 1839). They were married in Fraserburgh in 1851 where a few of their children were born before they moved to Liverpool and completed their family. Anthony was a master carter who died on January 10th 1892 quite possibly in an accident (his place of death is listed as Liverpool coroner). I've searched the Internet and in Liverpool records office but can't find any trace of his death being reported or a coroners inquest into the cause of death being recorded. He was quite wealthy at the time of death and left over £300 to his wife in his will. Yet less than 10 years later, in the 1901 census Christina is listed as an inmate of the Liverpool workhouse where she died on April 14th. Can anyone please help me find out how Anthony died, how Christina ended up in the workhouse and what her cause of death was, and what happened to the money Anthony left in his will?! Any help will be gratefully received. Thank you.
Re: The Monaghan family tree
Is this him in the probate index?
Anthony Monaghan of Dickinson St Liverpool master carter died 10 January 1892 administration 30 Oct 1894 to Christina Monaghan widow effects £266
If it is he didn't leave a will but over 2 years later his widow applied for administration of his estate. As a master carter he probably owned his own cart so there may have been debts etc to pay which could have eaten up the money

His place of burial is grave B518 in Ford Cemetery address being given as Liverpool Coroner so I would guess there was an inquest.
To get the actual cause of death you will need to purchase his death certificate and the same for Christina. She I see is also buried in Ford Cemetery.

Re: The Monaghan family tree
Wow - thank you so much for your replies. I'm so glad to see Anthony's death was ruled as natural causes and not crushed in an accident as I previously suspected it would be (although being burnt by a fire on Christmas Eve didn't exactly help). Am I right in thinking that by the looks of things Christina's tried to keep things going but then applied for his estate to be put into administration? Hence the sale of the horses and carts, etc. According to the 1881 census everything was going great - Anthony lived with Christina, their children, a few sons and daughters in law and even a servant - then come 1901 he was dead, the grown up children had taken their families and were living on their own, and poor Christina was in the workhouse where she eventually died. So sad!
Re: The Monaghan family tree
A part of the business may have survived for a while, a snippet from the Liverpool Mercury, May 15, 1895.
Also other news, Andrew Monaghan, Sparling St, in 1888 & 1889 got into trouble for not sending a child to school.
1881, a Anthony Monaghan from Liverpool, might be your Anthony, was fined 5 shillings in the Birkenhead court for taking part in after hours drinking in the Egremont Hotel

Wow - that's amazing! I'm finding out so much about a part of the family I thought I'd never know anything about.
Have checked on Andrew - he is my great great great grandfather (Anthony's son) and he lived in sparling street with his wife Rose and their children. The census of 1881 says the children are at school but if he's been in trouble twice for not sending them to school then maybe that wasn't quite the case.
Would love to know if the man who was fined for after hours drinking was the Anthony that was related to me! From the research I've done so far Monaghan was quite a popular surname with lots of Anthony's, Andrews, Williams and Martins.
So now I know a bit more about Anthony and his life I can focus a bit more on Christina.
Thanks again for all help!
Denise.

Re: The Monaghan family tree
The Workhouse was not only a refuge for the poor it also provided help for the ill and the elderly. A lot of people went into the Workhouse in later years like people now go into a nursing home or hospital.Clinic queen wrote:Really sorry to bother you but could do with some help please if anyone is able to give some advice. Hi and welcome to the forum. The crew have given you some excellent information there. The only thing I would suggest in addition to the above is that if you check the trade directories - Ancestry appear to have copies of many of them now - to see if you can pin down whether it was your Anthony at the various addresses mentioned, eg Sparling Street.

Re: The Monaghan family tree
Thanks for the lovely welcome
can't believe how helpful people have been. I've spent many an hour at Liverpool library and found nothing, but in the space of a day you've helped to fill in a lot of the blanks.
The address for sparling street is definitely registered to my family - the Andrew who lived there and was fined for not sending his children to school is in fact my great great great grandad!
With regards to Christina and the workhouse - I did wonder if she was a hospital admission when she died but I'm fairly sure she'd been in there for a number of years before her death, and with the 1901 census having her as "inmate" it made me wonder how she ended up there. I would have assumed she would have ended up living with one of her children in her old age, especially as they hadn't had a bad life growing up (money and a servant can't be bad).
