There's a Mr R C Steele listed as a passenger on a ship called Etruria which went from Liverpool to New York on Aug 29 1903, could this be 'our' Robert? He is listed as a single man, so it's possible I suppose...
Then there's another Robert Steele returning on the Lusitania from New York on May 24 1910 with a wife called Mary...

Re: Liverpool workhouse
When and where did his wife remarry and to whom? Do you have that marriage cert? Then Robert disappears...I've found his wife later remarried and two of his kids had moved out of that home to work (1901 Census)...and it's him we're after primarily.

Re: Liverpool workhouse
Hi DS,
I'm waiting on copies of all held certificates to arrive from my family (should be this week), I've found Robert's wife Annie registered as Connorton with husband Edward in the 1901 Census:
Edward Connorton,
Annie Connorton,
Edward Connorton (8),
William Connorton (2) ,
Mary Steele (22)
living at 152 Field Street, Everton.
Mary Steele is one of Robert's children, the other two have moved out and are working and living in Liverpool in 1901.
Thanks

Re: Liverpool workhouse
I had hoped that by establishing when Annie Elizabeth Steele remarried it might point to a time line for Robert Steele's death/disappearance. But according to the 1910+1...
Address: 41 Dee Street, West Derby
Edward Connorton 47 Head - Mat maker - Liverpool
Annie Connorton 56 Wife - Belfast
William Connorton 15 Son Messenger boy - Liverpool
Annie has been married 20 years but there is no marriage for an Edward Connorton back to 1881. I suspect one spouse abandoned the other and Annie moved in with Edward.

Re: Liverpool workhouse
Can't find a marriage between Edward Connorton and Annie, according to the 1911 census, it should have taken place around 1891, perhaps Annie wasn't free to marry.
The son Edward, 1893, was possibly killed 1915, Gallipoli, Army Number, 2037,(Anc). CWGC site have him recorded as F Connorton.

Hi and thanks for the information, due to technical difficulties (don't ask...) I'm still not in possession of the info my father has already...but I would like to ask something - you have quoted in your findings "District: LIVERPOOL; Volume: 8B; Page: 258" - and without sounding a complete idiot...what does this relate to and where/how can I view it?
Thanks again.
Re: Liverpool workhouse
Liverpool is the District Registry Office where the death was registered. The Volume and Page numbers refer to the Registry Book itself. You can see the entry transcribed here: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/MSteele wrote:I would like to ask something - you have quoted in your findings "District: LIVERPOOL; Volume: 8B; Page: 258" - and without sounding a complete idiot...what does this relate to and where/how can I view it?dickiesam wrote:Haven't found a marriage for Edward Connorton (and variants) up to the time of his death in 1926...

You can only see the actual details relating to the death [place and cause of death, who registered the death and their relationship to the deceased, and home addresses] by buying the death certificate from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ for £9.25, quoting the GRO Index references.... the year, district, volume and page numbers.
