Hi, is anyone able to tell me whether proof of ID was required in order to marry in 1898 please? If so how would they prove who they say if they were orphaned?
Thank you for your help.

Re: Proof of ID for marriages
As far as I am aware no proof was required. So someone marrying might say they were 21 when they were actually 19 but if they weren't marrying in the parish they were christened in and known to the vicar etc who would know? Likewise their addresses could be just those of "convenience" . A father's name could be invented to make them look "respectable" or the name of the man who had brought the person up could be given in all innocence but might not be the father!

I agree, I really don't think evidence was required otherwise so many of our ancestors wouldn't have got away with bigamy as they did.

Re: Proof of ID for marriages
No, proof wasn't need so far back. In fact, in a lot of cases the vicar would have filled the register in with the knowledge that he had, i.e., if the bride lived in a household, he would assume that the 'father' was the real father. He would also assume the given name and surnames of the couple as well. Obviously the couples wouldn't be able to check the correct details or spellings, especially if they have signed the register with a cross.
