Belfayre Jubilee Formby

Post by alcavtay »

Can anyone shed any light on this address given on a burial record from 1916?
I would guess it was a sanatorium as he died from TB

Belfayre, Jubilee Formby

Thanks

I would suggest that Jubilee might be Jubilee Road, which still exists in Formby however although many of the houses there now appear to be more recent than that date I can imagine it being an area where there were larger buildings, possibly being used for the purpose you suggest.

No that sanatorium was in Hawkeshead Street Southport. The poster is asking about a house in Formby.

I will look it up in the Southport directory when I am at Crosby Library on Wednesday.

The Formby Civic Society would probably know. If you google them you will find someone to contact

Hello Amanda,
I assume that the "burial record" you refer to is not a death certificate because the latter would give you the place of death and the deceased's home address. Belfayre may have been the name of the deceased's house.

In the last available census Belfayre is listed as a private house in Jubilee Road and is the 8 roomed residence of Daniel Higson, his wife and young daughter and two servants.

Dickiesam, I think that last one must be it, the address is from the cemetery burial records and I was assuming Sanatorium because he died of TB and I know he didn't live in Formby, I suppose in 1916 the house could well have been a private nursing house or just the house of a member of his family.

Many thanks everyone

It's not the death certificate, but the burial record from the cemetery.

This chap was a soldier who should have had a war grave but hasn't, the information about his death is just curiosity now, wanting to get as full a picture as possible but it is not necessary for having him commemorated.

He is on the probate index on Ancestry as

William Porter of Belfayre Jubilee Road Formby private 17th KLR died 19 April 1916 probate Liverpool 14 September 1916 to Mary Ellen Porter. Effects £1031 18s 3d

Usually they put of _______ and then died at _______ if they are 2 different places. To me it implies Belfayre could have been a home address.

The post on Roots Chat implies a death certificate is needed

the CWGC cannot do anything about pte porters headstone, hes not commemorated by them, they can only intervine when his details have been sent to them and passed for eligibility, his pension record[on ancestry] and death cert are needed,if he qualifies, then they will either erect a CWGC headstone or add his name to the screen wall within the cemetery

I assumed the death certificate had been obtained.

The death certificate has been obtained, but not by me. I was about to start a non-commemoration query for him when I discovered that the Liverpool Pals Association already had it in hand, they must have acquired the certificate as they tell me that he is eligible for commemoration.

I posted the query on here because I thought someone on this forum may know something about Belfayre. As I said, it's not necessary information, just satisfying my own curiosity. I agree with you about the probate record, it looks like that was his private address and I guess we can leave it there.

Many thanks for your help :)

The 1920/21 directory has Daniel Higson as the he head of the household. As he was there in 1911 it would appear that it was a private house.

The name 'Daniel Higson' was also that of the owner of Higson's brewery, which moved to Stanhope Street in about 1923/4. I think the brewer may have died before WW1.
This may be coincidence, red herring or... ?
