ship Holywood 1907

Please can anyone help i am trying to find information about a ship called Holywood in 1907 it could have sailed from Liverpool John Magee my husbands grandfather died on 17/3/1907 at sea presumed drowned we would like to know where this ship was at the time

Looking for the source you found for John Magee's death in 1907 for any clues as to where he died? I haven't found it yet in the GRO Deaths at Sea Index.

Hi on John Mcgee death certificate it states the ship holywood official number 123769 date of death 17/3/1907 disapeared at sea place of death lat 53.38n long 1.28e he was listed in the marine register of deaths we would like to know where about he was at that time it is sad as his son Tobias also died at sea aboard the ss ashcrest

I agree with Jan, I believe the records you would need to check will be held at the National Archives at Kew, however, an enquiry at the Liverpool Maritime Museum may just throw up some clue.

Thanks for your help i will try the national archives i have tried Liverpool maritime museum but they sugested i visited the museum and could not help as i live in Buckinghamshire this is difficult once again thanks

As far as I am aware to see the record you will have to go to the National Archives or employ a researcher to do so on your behalf. It would be an easier day trip from Buckinghamshire than from Liverpool!

If you put the co-ordinates into Google earth it plots in the North Sea off Skegness at roughly 90 degrees. Estimated at about 30 miles out.

Hi,
The coordinates given on that death cert indicate the vessel was in the North Sea, roughly 60 miles to the east of Grimsby. Using http://www.itouchmap.com/latlong.html produced this....

The Record at Kew covers the voyage made by the Holywood between the dates

Ship's name Holywood Official Number 102617 Date of Voyage 26 September 1905 - 21 February 1907.

The Crew list and Log book covering the Voyage made when John Magee lost his life on 17th March 1907 may be held in Newfoundland

When the National Archives were sorting out the vast Archive of Crew list and Agreements they offered them to the various Repositories that these Ships belonged to, Liverpool took a 10% Sample of Crew Lists/Log Books belonging to Liverpool Ships. The National Archives were going to ditch what remained, but the Newfoundland Archives rescued them. At the moment you need to know what the Official Number is of the ship your seafarer sailed on in order to see if they hold the Crew List/Log books for that year that the Voyages took place.

The 10% Sample held by Liverpool have been sent of to Ancestry and hopefully they will be available soon.

Oh wow someone always comes up trumps thank you so much for everyones help my husband is 81 and it is a great comfort to know where his grandfather died it has been a family mystery for years i can now let the rest of the family know what happened once again thank you all
