Maritime Archives and Library at the Maritime Museum

I picked up a leaflet the other day that listed what is held at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AQ Telephone 0151 478 4424

I know people often ask what is available and this seems to be an exceptionally good list so I thought I would post it for you.

Thousands of items are available to researchers including:
Liverpool registers of merchant ships
Records of the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board
Seamen's charity and educational records
Technical records
Shipping company records
Diaries of emigrants and seamen
Photographs, maps and charts
Accounts of slave traders

A reference library of printed books, pamphlets and periodicals including Lloyd's registers from 1764, Lloyds lists from 1741, customs bills of entry from 1820 and museum catalogues.

Microfilm and fiche readers and printers
Photocopier
Photographic services
Public internet access (limited)

Advice and Information
They recommend a personal visit to the Maritime Archives & Library. See their website for information on the collections, FAQs and research guides. They regret that they are unable to give valuations.

Regulations
To ensure the preservations of the books and documents for future generations they ask visitors to observe reading room rules which include
No mobile phones
No eating or drinking
Use pencils
Avoid leaning on documents
No writing or marking on documents
Silence as far as possible
Microfilm reservations will be kept 1 hour only after their booked time

Located near the lifts on the second floor of the Merseyside Maritime Museum
Please book microfilm readers in advance
Free admission
Proof of ID and Address is required
Open: Tuesday - Thursday 10.30 am - 4.30 pm
