EYEGLASS CORNER
“WIND UP” IN LIVERPOOL’S “PLUG STREET”
CITY.-Rendered half blind by loss of sight, panting and bewildered, a man solemnly turned in the shelter of the bridge-head of the Liverpool Landing Stage and shook his fist at the impassive front of the Liver Buildings.
His temper was not the only possession he had lost, for his pince nez lay shattered somewhere in the great roaring stone canyon that cleaves the Liver from the Cunard Building. He was one of many similar victims of brutal Boreas in the course of this month’s gales.
“WINDIEST SPOT.”
With the possible exception of the famous Edinburgh “steps.” Liverpool possesses the windiest spot of any city in the kingdom. Several times this week the wind has risen to almost hurricane velocity, and its fury, concentrated in the great artificial gulf made by two of the most remarkable buildings in Britain, has brought much extra work to local opticians.
Many “veterans” who are accustomed to weather the storm-belt daily, thoughtfully removes their nose-fittings at the foot of Water Street, after buttoning up their coats preparatory to “going over the top.”!
SAVED
One victim of “Eyeglass Corner,” dazed and buffeted by the recent gale, after searching for his “Chicago rimless,” which had broken from their nose-anchor, was overjoyed when a friend on the Landing-stage miraculously recovered them for him.
They were dangling behind the neck of his overcoat at the end of his ear-guard-safe and unbroken
