Having made some astounding discoveries recently I followed up on them to see what else I could find.It was not to lead to any further success unfortunately.
I asked the researcher that uncovered the initial finds as to the likelihood of his making future discoveries among differing registers and this is his response.
"Unfortunately from my experience with records kept in India, I can't offer you much hope! The reason is that it appears your ancestors were Church of England (as All Saint's church in Lucknow is C.of E.). The massive problem I have found is that virtually all C.of E. churches that I have visited have "lost" their registers. Mostly this is because the current CNI (Church of North India - the continuation of C of E. churches) is full of corruption. Many so called "priests" and "bishops" have only joined the church in order to sell church land at massive profits. One of the first things they do is to destroy the old church registers, so they can then claim that the property is not a church! This has happened in many cities and in Lucknow, All Saints church is the only Anglican church that has kept its records. Again this is probably because it is situated in the Military cantonments, so it would be virtually impossible to sell this church land anyway.
My experience shows me that only the R.C. churches look after their property and registers. Hopefully, if any of your Ruffe ancestors were Catholic, their records may be among the 630 photos I took at Allahabad of the R.C. registers (complete from 1862 to about 1950). i will be tackling these in a week or two. Meanwhile I have just assembled the records that I have transcribed from Kanpur (about 1800 lines of a spreadsheet!) and have only found one similar name.
If the LDS site doesn't give you any results, then probably they are lost. The LDS took microfilms of all the records which churches in India sent back to England. But it is reckoned that this is only about 65% of all records. However, with the problem of records being destroyed in India, it is unlikely you can find family records there."
Sad but not surprising really when the CofE churches responsibility is 'scoped' ?
Probably worth remembering if you are chasing your family back through the old colonial days ?
