Mariners

Thanks to Your Family Tree Issue 89, I thought some of this information might be useful, although some of it might have been previously posted by others.

A master mariner would have required a certificate of competency or service from the Board of Trade as these became compulsory for all masters or mates on foreign-going British vessels in 1850 and in coastal waters from 1854.

Personal information and voyages are listed on these certificates and they are deposited at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and information about these records are on the Museum's website http://www.nmm.ac.uk/
