Here is a useful guide for the 1939 National Identity Card census substitute and links for applying for this information. Few people will be prepared to pay £42 for a search for only a small amount of information but it may be worthwhile for some if it sheds light on a problem area of their research. No census information exists for 1931 (destroyed by fire) or 1941 (cancelled because of WW2). Details may only be obtained for people in the household who are now deceased:-

I believe Hilary, Education Officer, is proposing to apply for this in the hopes of breaking down a brick wall that we can't circumvent any other way. I hope she will add to this post when she has the details and tell us how easy the application process was and what exactly she got for her money.

The application has to wait until I have some spare cash. Brother thought it was a good idea but didn't offer to go halves!!
