Hoping that the variety on this site for Liverpool might make up for the lack of some websites not currently up and running - the 1890 North and South Liverpool have the indexes down the right hand side.

I don't know if anyone on here has posted about these Liverpool insurance maps or not. I was only told about them recently. The coverage is mostly near the docks and the city centre. The years covered are the 1880s and 1890s. They show great detail including usage of commercial properties, specific numbers for dwelling houses and details for courts that are usually left off most maps. There are various ways of viewing these maps I found "View In Google Earth" the best mode with that you get a bigger image, a transparency fader to compare modern and old maps and a side by side view:-

Cassini maps, well worth exploring this site, putting in your own postcode to see what was on the land historically http://www.ancestry-maps.com/?af=440

Scottish Genealogy Society

Historic Environment Scotland has relaunched its free PastMap website - discover Scotland’s historic sites and landscapes. You can now view eight different background maps, including the OS maps digitised by the National Library of Scotland, from 1840s to 1950s. It also includes aerial photography, allowing researchers to overlay site records onto a bird's eye image of the landscape. The site is fully mobile responsive and lets you download records using its take-away data service.

Plan of Liverpool 1790

Post by alex69 »

Not sure this is the right place and I'm sure it can be moved by the Administrators if necessary.

Useful plan of Liverpool from 1790 http://purl.pt/3689 which is zoomable.

60 years after this my lot were in Finney Lane (clearly shown between Thomas Street and Atherton Street off Paradise Street- Now Liverpool One of course)

Update - the old C1900 maps previously hosted by liverpoolhistoryprojects/liverpool-city-group has been redesigned and hosted by a Facebook Group member. Don't know as yet whether he will be able to host the other two, ie churches and schools & colleges, but we will definitely be happy to have the street indexes back again.

A lovely list of maps on this site, some may be duplicates of what we already have listed, but I'm posting this link in case some are new to us.

Re: Surname distribution maps for Ireland

A wonderful new website providing distribution maps for surnames in Ireland based on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. It will be very useful for anyone running a surname project. Home page here:
