Tracing a Living Relative and Adoptions
Tracing a Living Relative and Adoptions
We often seem to be asked how this can be done, so thought I'd post a few links, thanks to Dickiesam for some of them also.
First of all it's a good idea to check for likely marriages, then with the addition of the mother's maiden name children can be searched for more easily. This search would have to be done in the BMD indexes which are available on subscription sites such as
Ancestry
Findmypast
GenesReunited
or for FREE at your local library that will have free access to Ancestry, or your nearest Record Office where you will find them on microfiche.
A Facebook Group (based in the UK) helps conduct free searches for long lost family members and friends. They also deal in UK adoption searches for either the adoptee or birth family. https://www.facebook.com/groups/longlos ... llwelcome/
There are specific people tracing websites available by subscription, such as Tracesmart and 192.com
http://www.findmypast.co.uk has also recently included Electoral Registers from 2002 to 2013. You may find your library/Record Office has a subscription to this - Liverpool Record Office does.
Telephone directories - for Residential and Business
It's also a good idea to post a message in the "looking for" columns of the local newspaper - you can do this in the online version of the Liverpool Echo Liverpool Echo Old Pals board
and also try
Lost Cousins
Yo! Liverpool Forum Community
Cousin Connect
White pages
UK Electoral Roll and more Electoral Registers although I would suggest you try Findmypast and Ancestry first as they have quite a number of years.
Missing People
Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter may also prove useful.
and a couple of Facebook Groups
Searching for Lost Family UK and Search Squad
Do not post or ask anybody to post details of possible living people on our open forum as the message will be deleted.
Findmypast has entries for Electoral Registers of quite recent date.

Re: Tracing a Living Relative
Tagging on to this post as there are a number of adoption enquiries lately as a result of Family Finders and other such programmes.
Accessing birth records
https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records
and information from the GRO https://www.gov.uk/government/news/rela ... cation=ufi
If an adoption took place after 1926 then the approach should be made to the Social Services of the local council for the Adoption File.
An extra link that might be useful for adoptions
http://ukbirthadoptionregister.com/
The Salvation Army these are very good and professional but will charge for searching.
Adoption Search Reunion
As you know, our group does not permit searches or posts about living people, but if there are circumstances where you have a need to find someone, who is potentially still alive, either in your own family or that of a relative, there is a way (£).
London House International is a company that can institute a 'search and trace' for someone in records that the general public are not privy to. Naturally this will come at a cost, and if your need may outweigh the cost, then you can contact them at this site:
http://www.londonhouseinternational.com ... and-trace/
NOTE: this post is merely advisory - please do not comment about any proposed searches or people on this thread.

People usually submit a short appeal to make contact with named individuals, particular families or their descendants. Include street names or district names to avoid confusion with others of the same name. Provide an e-mail address or telephone number.

Re: Tracing a Living Relative and Adoptions
Thanks to Katie for noticing that while she was in the Manchester library there was a fiche in the drawer for Children adopted dating from 1927-2015.
Don't know what info it contains but if anybody accesses them perhaps they could give more details.

http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/ linked to it's sister site http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
has a lot more entries than it used to, becoming very useful especially for those looking for orphanages/Magdalen Homes/reformatories etc., although perhaps the details might be a little early for those searching in 20th Century.

Re: Tracing a Living Relative and Adoptions
A googlebook, so free,
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=UHu ... &q&f=false
could be very informative for people interested in what might have happened to adopted children, both before and after the Adoption Act.
