CERTIFICATES -DO NOT ORDER FROM A SUBSCRIPTION SITE - They charge 40 Euros.
Thanks DS
This is how to obtain a copy Certificate... There are now 2 ways of doing it.

Adequate for Research Purposes
Check Indexes here http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/c ... search.jsp (see below for the coverage).
Then order from the GRO. At present you cannot order and pay online at the Irish GRO site.. http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/GRO_Research.aspx but this is where you order from, the link is on the right side, or the link in the left list goes to the downloads so that you can fax an order through.
http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-fo ... cates.aspx
You must download the relevant application form and either complete it on screen or after printing it, using the data you have got from the Indexes [Year, Quarter, Volume #, Page # etc]. You can then either fax or post it back to the GRO. Takes about 7 days if you can fax it or up to 14 days by post. Specify a photocopy version which costs only 4 Euro [abt £4.50]. It is exactly the same as the certified copy costing 2x as much but has no legal standing. Ideal for family research. If you can't fax from your PC there is probably a friendly fax nearby but don't forget to take the fax number with you! You can also choose to have the certificate emailed to you.

Certified copies of Certificates (more expensive)
However, you can order and pay online for certified BMDs which cost 10 Euro each [abt £7.90] plus a small charge for postage at the Health Service Executive [aka the HSE] site
http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_S ... icates_ie/
But, you must know the mother's maiden name to use this service so its usefulness is limited.

Each certificate costs €8, with a fee of €2 for searching. There is an additional fee of €1 for postage to addresses in the Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom and €2 for postage elsewhere.

When you have the birth cert and maiden name post that info here and we'll try and find the marriage.

Note: BMD records after 1922 for Northern Ireland are held at PRONI, the Northern Record Office in Belfast. https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/proni

(I think this is 1920 but stand to be corrected)

As with many sites in England also - Ancestry for example, there are always others that charge a fortune for supplying a certificate. There is one for Ireland - birthsdeathsmarriages . ie charging approximately 40 Euros a certificate.

Be aware that these sites are merely ordering from the same place as we have suggested but charging many times the price - don't go near them.

Re: Ordering Irish BMDs

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Mary,
Re certs from the HSE site..... An update...
Certificates.ie - Save time buying online
Order certificates of birth, adoption, stillbirth, marriage, civil partnership or death on this, the official Health Service Executive website, using a secure payment facility. Choose from the options to read more about this site and get started.

The price of a standard certificate is €20 (plus postage).
And re ordering from the IRGO.... http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/General- ... ffice.aspx
Note: Photocopies of entries in the registers are also available at a cost of €4.00. These contain exactly the same information as a Certificate but are only of use for research purposes.

And now there is an option to have the cert emailed to you...
If this application is for a photocopy please tick the box if you wish to have it e-mailed to you at this email address:

Re: Collection of links for Irish Records

http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/
A new and improved set of Irish civil registration indexes.

The Births Index, which dates from 1864, includes the mother's maiden surname from 1900. Additionally, the actual date of birth is included from 1900 to 1927 and from 1966 to current.

The Marriages index, which dates from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages and from 1864 for all marriages, includes the names of both bride and groom for all marriages from 1913, and for some marriages from 1900 to 1912.

The Deaths Index, which starts in 1864, includes the age at death from 1924 and the marital status of the deceased from 1966.

As with the pre-existing online database, the new GRO Indexes cover the entire island up to and including 1921. Thereafter, it includes only those events registered in the Irish Free State/Republic of Ireland.

Re: Collection of links for Irish Records

Post by MaryA »

Irish Archives Resource, abbreviated as “IAR,” is a portal that recently has been greatly expanded. It links together hundreds of unique archival collections and 34 archive services in Ireland north and south. Ireland’s first archive web portal, Irish Archives Resource (IAR), includes contribution from Trinity College Dublin’s Manuscripts and Archives Research Department, RTÉ Stills Library, National Museum of Ireland Archives, University College Cork Archives, Derry City Council Heritage and Museum Service, and the archives of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. It does not hold any images of archives or records. Instead, it provides a means to search archival descriptions from various contributing institutions.

The archive is not specifically a genealogy resource. Instead, it contains all sorts of archival descriptions, many of which will prove to be useful resources to genealogists, historians, social scientists, film historians, Irish citizens, Irish emigrants and their descendants, and to many others. It should appeal to anyone interested in accessing Ireland’s archival heritage.

Beginning as a pilot project in 2008, as a result of a joint initiative of the Heritage Council and Archives and Records Association, Ireland, the IAR is an all-Ireland portal containing collections from Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and National Archives of Ireland.

The IAR is currently funded by the Heritage Council, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Northern Ireland. The portal is hosted by University College Dublin’s School of History and Archives. With adequate funding, it aims to expand the current number of contributing archive services from 34 to up to 70.

The Irish Archives Resource may be found at http://www.iar.ie

At the moment the easiest and least expensive way to obtain pre-1922 Irish BMD is to purchase photocopies using this form:-

http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/images/con ... G_site.pdf

Form available via this page:-

GRONI changes to fees

Post by MaryA »

The fees charged by the General Register Office for Northern Ireland (https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information ... ry-general) are set to change from April 4th, with some good news and some bad. The good news is that the cost of certificates will remain unchanged, and the search room fee of £7 is set to be removed for use of GRONI's facility in Belfast. The bad news is that the cost of online historic certificate images, as hosted on the GENI platform at https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk is set to rise - credits will increase from 40p to 50p, meaning that a historic certificate image will rise to £2.50 from £2.

Catholic Registers - Use Ancestry/fmp; don't just trawl pari

Post by luxor »

When the Irish Catholic Registers were published - http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx - I just trawled the local one. I found some baptisms, but not the marriage of my ggggf/ggggm. There was some publicity when Ancestry & fmp published indexes, but I didn't rush to use them... I thought I had it covered previously. Yesterday I did an Ancestry search and found them in the 'wrong' register. These are early records; I don't know if there was patchy recording over a wide area at the start, or if it was a convenience in the 1970's to fit random pages to fill a microfilm, but some records are stored in unexpected places. Checking the front of the register confirmed it:

If an index shows your ancestors names, but in a 'seemingly' wrong area; ignore the location and check it out - the indexes use the 'official' location of the register, so they are misleading when other bits and pieces from 'outside' are lumped together.

EDIT: 'Many parishes changed their original geographical spread so you may well find there are earlier records for your ancestors' locality in the registers of an adjoining parish. Getting to know the geography of your ancestor's place of origin is therefore time well spent.'

An often overlooked site
https://www.failteromhat.com/index.php
This site contains genealogical information extracted from various census, directories, cemeteries and newspapers. Free sources of Irish genealogical information are rare on the internet!. This site offers a number of online Irish databases and transcribed documents, including Land Owners in Ireland 1876, Irish Flax Growers List 1796, Pigot & Co's Provincial Directory of Ireland 1824, Postal Directory of Cork 1842-43, Slater's Commercial Directory of Ireland 1846, Guy's Postal Directory of Cork 1914 and cemetery transcriptions and photographs.
