South Africa News

Good news for those like me that have sorely missed the benefits of Ancestry24.za
since early this year. The records have been saved by the looks of it.

True to form, here we are 7 months later and no sign yet !
For anyone using NAAIRS and getting anywhere I regret to say that if the files you find are at the Capetown Archive (i.e. with the prefix KAB) then regretfully the archives there are not allowing mechanical reproduction by proxies and will only allow themselves to reproduce any documentation.
Their charges are not unreasonable if you are at the archive in person but, if you are not and like me you are a long way away, then you have to apply in writing to the chief Archivist filling in the appropriate forms (on-line) with the detail you have found and then wait for them to return you a quote for the work to be carried out.
Upon receiving the quote which will be in South African Rand you then have to ask your local bank for an International Money Order drawn against a South African Bank . This then has to be sent using 'snail mail' to the head of finance at the Department in question.
In my case I wanted a file that I had received a quote from them for R72 (approx £5) but by the time I would have been to the bank and obtained the I M O (approx £19+) and sent it all by courier post (approx £17:50) it would have been a complete waste of money.
In other areas of the country I was able to use the services of an eGGSA photographer who did a sterling job of it and I used PayPal to pay his bill.

Add Edit :-
Now found a local genealogist and researcher who will search and deal with all KAB enquiries at a very, very reasonable charge and uses a UK bank account so if anyone needs her services feel free to PM me.
