Re: Conscription WW2
My Dad used to talk about waiting for his call-up, and I had the impression it was several months. During that waiting period he decided that if he waited he would probably be sent to the Army, the Infantry, and he didn't like the thought of that, so he volunteered for the RAF before his call-up pap...

Re: Baptisms
A relative who lived in Coleridge Street around WWI went to St Phillip's on Sheil Road. The RC alternative would be St Michael's, West Derby Road, I think.

Re: Electoral registers Liverpool 1919
Thanks Katie and all. I had forgotten I had asked this before! I have also just persevered with the browsing function on Ancestry and found the 1919 register. I saw what Katie saw:- Theresa on her own, qualification to vote is "O", i.e. her own occupation, not in right of a husband. It does look lik...

Electoral registers Liverpool 1919
I see that Ancestry only appear to have Liverpool Electoral registers at five-year intervals (1920, 1925, 1930 and so on). Are the 1919 registers available at Liverpool RO? Are they on open search or do I have to book to see them? I am interested in a Theresa Lee and her husband James Lee. In 1920 T...

Re: Birthplace and registration district
My father's eldest sister was born in North Manchester in November 1913, but then her parents returned to Liverpool. The baby was registered in Liverpool in January 1914, with her birthplace in Manchester properly declared, but the new address in Liverpool given as the address of the informant - her...

Re: Finding a Residence...
From 1781 there would be Land Tax, I think. It mightn't give any address, but you could estimate the size of the cottage / smallholding / farm from the amount of tax paid. Some years the tax lists do mention a place name. And then if you trace the holding forward to subsequent tenants, and if the ti...

Re: Marriages
I think that things were sometimes different in farming communities. A man and his wife had to have a large family to help with all the work. With a large home-grown workforce, they could expand the farm. So what a problem there would be if the couple turned out to be infertile together. So once fer...

Re: Liverpool Catholic Burial Records - Ford
Crosby Library have the full set of microfiche, with an alphabetical name index and also a sequential grave index showing the owners and all the people in the grave, with burial dates. Ancestry's indexes sometimes show only the grave number but not the section, but the Crosby Library microfiche show...

Re: Accident info
If the death was registered (by the coroner?) after the inquest (as it should have been), what's on the death certificate probably IS the outcome of the inquest.

Re: "New" posts might not be working properly
Yes, I have tried the others, and they don't show genuinely new (to me) posts either. Also, the little maroon "document" icon next to the "text circle" appears to indicate "unread posts", but when I read the thread and come back to the list, the little "unread posts" symbol hasn't cleared, as simila...

"New" posts might not be working properly
I like the new look, but find that when I click on "New Posts" a lot of what comes up is threads from previous weeks, with no new posts in them. From other forums I use, "new posts" usually gives me just the threads on which there have been new posts since I last visited, but this forum doesn't seem...

Re: A mystery child, Thomas or Louisa Lee
Just adding to this old thread with extra information. I finally sent for the PDF BC of the interesting Louisa Ann Bates Lee. She was born 2 Feb 1862, at 2 Wood Street East, West Derby RD, no father listed, mother Elizabeth Meadows Lee, registered on 15th March 1862 by x the mark of Elizabeth Lee, o...

Liverpool Absent Voters' lists?
This has probably been asked and answered before, but here goes.
The online listings for the Absent Voters' lists (soldiers still away in 1919) don't seem to cover Liverpool. The coverage is quite spotty.
Do Liverpool lists exist online, and if not, are they available in Liverpool Archives?

Success! He mailed me back almost immediately as follows Hello Barbara Please accept my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I have tracked down the War Memorial and I’m pleased to report that it is safely in storage in the cathedral. It is currently in the Organ Blower Chamber, which is ea...

Re: Missing WWI memorial, St John's Church Waterloo
Not a dickie bird since my last posting, so this morning I have mailed Chris Leggett again, asking him how he is getting on with taking a photo to the Cathedral. I have also put to him the question about an inventory, and whether he would let them all be photographed. I emphasised that this is in th...

Re: St Helens Local Studies
Just heard from the Library Support Unit: Unfortunately at the moment we cannot give an exact date for Central Library re-opening. The work that needed doing was put out to tender and has now been started but until they uncover all of the plaster they will not know how extensive the damage is to the...

Re: St Helens Local Studies
I just e-mailed the address given above by Hilary, but it bounced. "No such address". Do I just e-mail the general St Helens council address and let them forward it internally? I will try that and let you know. Thanks Katie for suggesting Huyton for the Prescot Reporter, and I will be going there so...

It isn't clear to me what I should try Warrington for. To find out the St Helens re-opening date? Or to find the newspaper microfilms?

St Helens Local Studies
I was thinking of going there soon to look at some newspapers on microfilm, but their website tells me they are "closed for 29 weeks" without giving a start or end date. Does anyone know when it will be re-opening? While it's closed, is there anywhere else I can look at the microfilms of "St Helens ...
