Re: Who on earth is Herbert Basden Thackway?

No Mary, don’t have her marriage certificate, but I was sure it was her based on addresses on nursing rolls etc. But you’re right, I should send for the certificate. Yes, info is from Probate.
I might have to take some time off this, my mum passed away in her sleep last night.

Who on earth is Herbert Basden Thackway?

Eliza Woodfine’s life is well documented, from her birth and baptism in Liverpool in 1866, she appears in a number of directories as nurse/midwife, and documented on all censuses. She married Charles Firth in 1923 when she was 57. When she died in 1949 her effects went to Herbert Basden Thackway, en...

Re: Indecipherable names

Thanks for your efforts Ann! Yes, that's the family. I did find a James McCosh born Scotland, right age, but no marriage so far. I was excited to see an Iverna in one census record but can't find a connection. The search goes on.

Re: Indecipherable names

I have tracked down all her siblings Mary. They were all from Liverpool and emigrated to Canada - a sister Lilian who married a Herbert Wyer, half sisters Emma and Hannah Hawkins and half brother William, all of whom I have in 1921. Ada married Herbert Potter in 1926, a year after his first wife die...

Re: Indecipherable names

You are too good, Mary, thank you. I need to spend more time figuring out how to add an image with that Photobucket thing.

Thanks for the suggestions luxor, could be McCosh. Could be anything!

Indecipherable names

Can anyone figure out who these people are? I found the relative I was looking for, Ada Ryan, b.Liverpool 1887. She emigrated to Canada in 1911 (on the ship manifest her intended employment is as 'domestic to brother') where her sister and half siblings also emigrated. On the 1911 Canada census she'...

Re: Latin baptism name Bernard/Bridget?

Thanks Mary for going to that trouble.
And thanks Karen, now I know what to look for on baptism records. It's a girl. But isn't Bernardus a strange name for a girl? Or is that the equivalent of Bernadette?

Latin baptism name Bernard/Bridget?

I am confused over a catholic baptism name. One of the children of John Belton and Mary Jane Woodfine was baptised in 1883 at our Lady of Reconciliation de la Salette under the Latin name Bernardus. I assumed the child was male, with a name similar to Bernard. But the only birth registration I found...

Re: Buried in Greece

Karen, I thought there may be family in Australia, but have no info on James before he moved to Liverpool.
Sorry about the photo Mary, haven't managed to figure it out :(
I'll try to find a Greek genealogy forum and pick their brains!

Buried in Greece

My GGgrandfather, James Clark, died at sea on Nov 13 1894 and was buried in Patras, Greece. The details are given in the Mercury, 8 Dec.1894. My questions - 1) How can I find out where he was buried? I googled and found there are three present-day cemeteries in the city of Patras. The local Greek Or...

Re: S.S. Palmella (Liverpool)

I came across a similar mystery. Thomas Woodfine died when the Highland Corrie was torpedoed in 1917 but did not appear among the war dead. I learned from the very friendly and helpful English Heritage researchers who sent me the Complete Monument Report, that some of the crew got into a lifeboat, b...

Re: Woodfine Holden?

March bird, you may be right. One would think enumerators would be required to have the clearest handwriting. Neston, Nelson, Newton, just not good enough. But really it should say Liverpool!

Re: Woodfine Holden?

Hi Steve, I've realised to expect coincidences in this genealogy business, it's amazing the connections we can make. I look forward to filling in all the blanks, from your side and mine. If I come up with anything I'll let you know. Good luck with all those Seths! Look forward to seeing you at the l...

Ken, that sounds like one huge, but hugely rewarding, quest.
It should keep you going for a while, but what better to spend time on?
Regards.

Re: Woodfine Holden?

Sorry Simone, yes I did see that post about Leonard, but you threw so much at me I didn't find time to comment! I have looked on FMP but all I get is the reference you found. Could very well be him, but it'll have to be put on the back burner in case something is available in future. I have lots to ...

Re: Woodfine Holden?

Sorry Ken, I can imagine your excitement, only to be let down. But I have you to thank for instigating my search. When I saw your name I remembered seeing it in connection with Woodfine, and decided to ask the experts for help. You're right, the people here are the best. I'd been looking for years a...

Many thanks.

Re: Woodfine Holden?

Thank you. Good finds Simone. Sarah Holden in 1901 living with the Tweedlies is my GGgrandma IF that's her in 1881 with Margaret and Jane/James. That could be her as Mary in 1891 as a widow, but more research necessary. What do you think? All the subsequent trails depend on that IF. As for these Sim...
