Thank you, Mary. I remembered that Hilary had an article in the latest journal about maps and that gave me a few ideas to pursue.
And Seeker, too, for more information to use and squirrel away.

Re: Moss' Cottages
An Ordnance Survey map dated 1893 shows a row of nine terraced houses in Old Lane named Banks Buildings while in the 1901 and 1911 census they appear to be called Moss’ Cottages (I believe this originally came from Chris Leigh) My cousin in Widnes says that Moss' Cottages were called that after the ...

Re: Census: Boarder
I think the suggestion that the wife's occupation was to be in charge of any lodgers, seems reasonable. I also appreciate the lesson that you have to look closely at everything and in this case notice that the handwriting is different. Ultimately, I have to agree with DickieSam: One can only surmise...

Home for lunch. My excel sheet doesn't transfer easily, but here are the details for the 1891 census where I found Harriet named as "Lodg" ttyl. 1891 England Census about Harriet Radley: Old Lane Name DOB Place of Birth Relationship Occupation Civil Parish Ecclesiastical John Radley 1852 (39) Garsto...

Re: Census: Boarder
What is interesting about "Lodg" is that it is the listing for my great grandmother in her own house. She is listed as "Wife" but also listed as "Lodg." I found another woman on the same page listed the same way. Perhaps it is the fault of the census taker or perhaps it means they were living there ...

Census: Boarder
Two more questions for the group: 1. When a person is listed on the census (in this case 1891), as a "boarder" does that mean he/she lives with the family or only takes meals with the family? 2. My great grandmother is listed as "wife" but also listed as "Lodg." I assume this means lodger and by def...

Moss' Cottages
Hello friends, My great grandparents lived in Old Lane Moss' Cottage as early as 1878. in the 1842 Tithe Awards, there is an Isaac Moss who was the tenant of Hammer and Pincers' Inn (pub, smithy, orchard and land). 12 acres. Also, the Hammer and Pincers Publicans between 1817 - 1901 were from the Mo...

Re: Bastardy Bonds
Possibly. Harriet was abt. 18 when she gave birth to Eleanor. Harriet was living and presumably working in Ditton. But that is not to say, the father was from elsewhere or as they say in Maine, "away." Perhaps she worked in a house where someone visiting took advantage of her. So many possibilities....

Re: Bastardy Bonds
Thanks for doing that as I saw it in there and didn't know where else I could put it. The more I think about this, it makes sense that there may have never been a hearing if the child was taken care of by the Haughtons. We have a new show in the USA - Genealogy Roadshow. DS suggested doing this to reach more eyeballs. I'm glad you are as bewildered as I am as to its location as I looked and wondered where I was going to post and not be redundant.

Re: Bastardy Bonds
I could not find anything in either on the http://archivecat.lancashire.gov.uk/calmview/ or http://archives.cheshire.gov.uk/what_we_hold.aspx Sometimes I wonder if I don't know how to conduct a proper search or if it's truly not there. I will put my post on the main sub-forum and see if someone ther...

You continue to be incredibly helpful. I'll try these two ideas first and let you know. If I have no joy, I'll move the post over.
Thank you for your quick responses. I have my work cut out for me now.

Hello dear friends, It has been a while - a brief detour into my husband's Irish side and a visit to Ireland this summer. I also returned to Wales in my continuing search for Harriet Hughes and a stop to see my cousin in Widnes, which unfortunately, did not coincide with your monthly meeting. Howeve...

Very interesting about the winds and the laundry.
There has also been a lively discussion about this issue on the FB page.
Have enjoyed everyone's perspective.

Re: Widnes: Escaping The Chemical Metropolis
Sorry I was unclear. I am specifically interested in the years 1890 - 1910, but also am interested in personal experience from people who grew up in the area as the environment seemed extremely degraded for a long time.

Re: Widnes: Escaping The Chemical Metropolis
Thanks Hilary for the Widnes blog spot link. What about later when Widnes became known as "a poisonous hell town" and "the dirtiest, ugliest and most depressing town in England.”? Or when anyone on this board was growing up? My cousin talks about being sent home from school because the visibility wa...

Widnes: Escaping The Chemical Metropolis
Hello good people. It's been a while, but I think of you often as I continue my research and working on the wee family book. In the book Hard Times by Charles Dickens (1854) there is a passage that talks about people escaping the pollution of their town: " . . . it was customary for those who now an...

Re: Ditton Schools 1890 - 1910
Birth Certificate for Eleanor Hughes The GRO has no birth certificate for Eleanor Hughes born 1877 in Ditton. There is a listing on Free BMD for Eleanor Radley born in 1877 in Prescott. I should have ordered that at the same time, but was too focused on Eleanor being a Hughes. I have now ordered tha...
