Re: Help with deciphering 1861 handwriting please.
I think the children were born Liverpool and the parents Ireland. Ages on censuses I would view with caution, Mary's maiden name is likely to be Archer and not as transcribed Archard at the baptism. Ah yes ... Archer ... thanks, Bert. There's a James Archer (aged 50) living with the family in 1861;...

Re: Help with deciphering 1861 handwriting please.
Gosh, thanks ever so much Hilary
NB: Ellen McCraith was my 2nd great-grandmother ... amazing change of fortunes: she was brought up in poverty in a Liverpool court dwelling, but was comfortably well-off by the time she passed away (living on the Isle of Man)!

Re: Help with deciphering 1861 handwriting please.
Many thanks Hilary and Bert ... I didn't have that info on Mary T, and I hadn't got as far as the mother's maiden name! I don't think 'Fensen' and Mary T are the same person though ... According to census, Mary T was born in Ireland (as were her parents and older siblings); whereas 'Fensen' was born...

Help with deciphering 1861 handwriting please.
Hello All, I'm researching my McCraith ancestors, and have hit a snag with my 2nd great grand-aunt. The online transcription of the 1861 UK census gives her name as 'Fensen McCraith' (aged 5). She was born in Liverpool. However, I can't find any other record for a person of this name (ie: no B,M,D, ...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
An unexpected windfall (of any size!) would be absolutely splendid, Mary! The only 'missing' Kelly that I have is the 'brick wall' at the start of the thread: Ethel Kelly (my Grandmother's sister) so I really must get cracking with the research! (Anglia Research would take 24% of the inheritance). H...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
Many thanks for the Letters of Administration document, Blue ... that certainly puts a 'full stop' to a theory by some McQuinn descendants that John Pope left a small fortune that was never collected! And thanks for confirming the situation, Hilary. Now this may be a sheer coincidence, but this morn...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
Many thanks for getting in touch with the R.O and providing that info, Hilary. Incidentally, does anyone happen to know where (or even 'if') I might find a copy of a will dated 1858? The will is that of John Pope, who lived on Lime Street. (Rumour has it that the cash he bequeathed was from the proc...

Yes, I'll wait Mary.
(Incidentally, if I go to Preston I'd be happy to do a 'look up' for someone else whilst I'm there).

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
Hi Mary, I carried out an online search of the wills at the Leeds Probate Registry, and had 'hits' for both of the Kelly wills that I was interested in (1910 and 1955) ... so I assumed that's where they were stored. I'm not quite sure how it works, but it's possible to see wills held by the Leeds Pr...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
Sent an email to Lancs Record Office to ask whether they had the 1910 and 1955 Wills there. They responded very quickly with the following message ... I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else requires similar information: Wills for old Lancashire up to 1858 are kept here at Lancashire Archives...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
OK, thanks very much Hilary. It's good to know the procedure. (Yes, isn't it wonderful to be able to travel by bus from Southport to Preston with a travel pass ... one of the benefits of being a bit 'long in the tooth' (probably the only benefit, in fact!) Actually, I'm beginning to wonder whether m...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
OK, thanks Hilary. I've been to Preston RO previously (to copy 'lunatic asylum' records) but my ticket expired last year, so I'll be sure to take additional forms of ID. (Always poses a problem as I don't drive or go abroad, and I have 'paperless billing' for utilities ... but my OAP travel pass usu...

Re: The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
Gosh, thanks ever so much to everyone for your invaluable help. Although many of the family did have middle names, it didn't seem to be a 'fashion' with them, and there are several single-named members throughout the generations, so I think Ethel was quite likely to have had just the one name. With ...

The 'Ethel Kelly' brick wall - advice please!
Ethel Kelly b. 1904 in West Derby was my Grandmother's sister. Unfortunately I have been unable to find out much about her ... due mainly to the name Ethel Kelly being so very common in Liverpool around that era! Her Father was George Thomas Kelly (1875-1955) and her mother was Amy Anderton (1877-19...

Yes, I do, too! Give me a couple of days, and I'll take my camera when I next go to visit my bro'. (It's a Victorian house, and I doubt that it has been altered structurally since your relative lived there).PhilaKen wrote:That would be fantastic! I always like to see where people lived.
