Re: Old custom house looking south
I have a copy of a ‘City of Liverpool Licensing report Book’ for 1909. It shows that the Compass and Anchor, 1 Canning Place, had two entrances to that street and one to Strand Street. An annotation shows it traded until 1932. It was managed for Mellor & Co, brewers. It had535 sq ft licensed drinkin...

Re: Query about a baptism entry
There were two sorts of iron construction: cast iron, as in St George, Everton and St Michael in the Hamlet, where both have columns and arches of cast iron. These were permanent buildings. The others, often known as iron or tin churches had a frame of some sort, cladded with galvanised corrugated ...

Re: Query about a baptism entry
There were quite a few iron churches, and a Garston company, Moretons or Morton’s provided some locally and also exported.

It’s very important that you look after yourself, Mary. This forum becomes even more essential without the help desks and talks.

Re: 33 Ullet Road - Original Occupier
The first edition, Ordnance Survey 6-inch map was published in November 1850. Ullet Lane is shown, but the only house between Smithdown Lane (now Road) and Lodge Lane (now Sefton Park Road) was Ullet Hall, on the east or 'wrong' side of the road for number 33. I don't know when the next edition was ...

Must have changed, as I had a very quick reply from the lady vicar. The church is locked like so many of us, but her reply was friendly, so patience needed.

Re: 'A Foreign Field' by Ben Macintyre (2001)
Thanks! With time available, haystacks can be torn apart!
According to one site, Wm Thorpe may be on the memorial at St John’s, Knotty Ash in Doddyland. I have sent a query to the vicar but may have to wait a while. Meanwhile, back to the hay.

'A Foreign Field' by Ben Macintyre (2001)
I have had this book for several years but until going through the shelves for a good read, while libraries are closed, I found I had never read it. It is a true story of a handful of British soldiers, separated from their units in the German advances of 1914, who link up and are hidden by French vi...

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sure that some of the members here will soon be flicking through directories etc.

Thanks for the link, Mary, but it is the U.S. version, not U.K, so less valuable than I hoped.

Keep calm and keep digging
It is good to see, in the Liverpool section of the forum, that at least two of our friends are still digging, though pent up for now. As another who has no ‘get out of jail card’ I expect many others will be tidying up scraps of notes, filing certs away and making good use of online material. Don’t ...

Thanks again. JohnnyO, if you have time and there is a break in the rain, could you look at RD1225 and get a photo if there is a headstone?

Re: Burial at Ford Cemetery, 1920
Interesting! I looked on FreeBMD and found no death registration for Charles in that quarter, so ANC may be confusing us all.
This is the first time I have become involved with Ford cemetery and did not think it would be so confusing.
Thanks to forumites for your interest.

Clincher! No need for the cert now. Thanks all round, but the others in the grave could also be helpful, so yes, please, JohnnyO.
