Oh my, what nostalgia there is in these posts :) I remember all the goodies mentioned, and can't say I disliked any of them apart from the cod liver oil....spooned down our throats whether we liked it or not  YUKKK!!!! Despite that I have managed to develop Rheumatoid Arthritis and have one r...

Re: National Burial Index
Hi I have a copy of the disc unfortunately it only has Anglican burials - no Catholic or non-conformist burials. Le me know if I can check any names for you. Yappie Hi Yappie, If your kind offer is still open, I wonder if you would have a look for my grandma please? Her name was Jane Emily Simpson,...

Record Office closure
Hello everyone, I wonder if anyone can tell me whether or not the new temporary premises for the records will have access to the Newspapers for the 18th/19th centuries please? I had intended to make the trip to Liverpool but health problems made that impossible before it all closed :( I know for ce...

Have you tried the Liverpool Record Office? They have older Elecotral Registers there, so you never know. As far as I know there is no online access, but it's easy to read what's available at the Record office, you just nead a readers ticket, which they will give you free when you first go there and...

Hi Marchbird, That's interesting, and I wonder if our pennies were for a cot? Shame Evered has long gone, but I wonder if there are any records about this anywhere? Maybe the Record office? I'm hoping to have another weekend in Liverpool before the winter sets in, so I may try to find out :) Funny h...

Several years later going on to grammar school, we sponsored one of the beds and every Monday morning, we took a penny or twopence for "cot" money. Marchbird Marchbird, may I ask which school you went to? I went to Evered Avenue, Liverpool after passing the 11+ and we also took a Penny or Twopence ...

I'm finding this thread most interesting and wonder if anyone has a photo of the Ellen Gonner Home as it was before it became flats? I have always known that my eldest brother and I spent some time in a children's home when we were young, but have not been able to find out which one or the reason wh...

Re: CHILDREN'S HOMES
I never discussed it with my Mum, I don't know why not, expecially as I had nightmares about it until I was at least 12. I remember being slapped and kept on my own. I think it was because of toileting issues. The staff were always in smart two piece suits. I did not meet my brother until he was 3 ...

I would agree with MaryA...the local register office will be more helpful than the GRO with this one. I have found Liverpool excellent in this respect, even going so far as to ring me because I had mis-quoted the reference number and they rang me to confirm the name etc., of the person I was looking...

That's very interesting Marie. The children's home I remember so well was a very large house with either very big windows or bay windows at the front and steps up to the front door.. It was set in large grounds with what was probably an orchard because we were given fruit from the trees every day......

When I was searching for my grandfather's grave I rang Anfield cemetery and gave them the information....name and date of death. The young man I spoke to said it might be a day or two before he got back to me, so I made a cuppa and decided to concentrate on someone else in the family. About an hour ...

That's great Jan :D Just shows how much can be discovered from one question :D I don't know whether I was evacuated or not, but I do know my brother and I spent some time in what I've always thought was a children's home. I've exhausted all the possibilities down that road, so I thought I'd try and ...
